HELCO’s newest Fast Charger is now officially launched!

Several leaders from HELCO, KTA, and members of the Big Island EV Association gathered on a sunny and brisk Friday morning (March 10, 2017) to bless and celebrate the island’s latest EV DC Fast Charger. Details of the event were published in this Big Island Now article: Hawai‘i Electric Light Opens Third EV Charger on Big Island

HELCO is working with local companies who are willing to be ‘host sites’ for these stations. One such company is KTA Super Stores.

““We’re pleased to have KTA Super Stores as our first host on Hawai‘i Island and applaud them for supporting electric transportation and clean energy,” said Jay Ignacio, Hawai’i Electric Light president. “The Taniguchi family and their employees have humbly served island residents for more than a hundred years. KTA excels at anticipating and meeting customer needs, and this partnership is one example of their commitment to give back to the community in which they serve.””

“To become a DC Fast Charger host site, call (808) 969-0358 or mail Hawai‘i Electric Light (GoEV), Engineering Department, P.O. Box 1027, Hilo, HI 96721.”

This station is the latest in a few that will be required across our island to enable hassle-free EV travel. If you’re a business owner or know of a business that may be an ideal host site, please direct them to HELCO.

Once again – Mahalo to HELCO and KTA for helping Hawaii reach its sustainability goals.

Fast Charger Usage Tips:

  • Your EV must have a fast charge port (CHAdeMO or CSS) to use this charging station.
  • Tesla vehicle owners must have a CHAdeMO adapter. See this article for details.
  • Depending on time of use, there will be a flat fee of $7-8. See screenshot below for pricing details.
  • Go to plugshare.com (also download their mobile app) to view details of the station, including
feedback offerd by users. If you get the opportunity to use this or any other charging station on the island, please take a few moments to give an update on plugshare.com (this will help others learn about the status of a station ahead of a visit).
