Hawaiian Electric Light Company’s Level 3 station in Hilo is open for service.

The Hilo station was dedicated today!  The event was graced by numerous dignitaries – business and government leaders – HELCO leadership, members of the Big Island EV Association (Cody Osborne, Emily Ebert, and Stephanie Hall-Morin), and the public.

HELCO leadership shared information about their plans for EV charging stations and their perspective on the role of EVs in Hawaii’s energy independence goals. (Of course, we already knew this but it was great to hear the public commitment.) It was also very good to hear that there was awareness of our association and even our website! One of the employees even mentioned our Drive Electric Week event – our community outreach and education is working.

Back to the Hilo Level 3 Fast Charging Station…

The station will be accessible 24/7. The parking area will be well – lit.  Depending on time of use, there will be a flat fee of $7-8. The address is 1200 Kilauea Ave, Hilo, HI 96720.

Next!

The HELCO Kona Level 3 Fast Charger will be dedicated at 11am tomorrow. Our association will be represented by Richard Castro and Eric Hayden.  If you’re in the Kona tomorrow, feel free to join in and share your appreciation of this development. The location address is 74-5519 Kaiwi St, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

Importantly, HELCO leadership confirmed that a Level 3 station will be installed in Waimea soon (actual location is still being finalized).  If realized, we’ll have FOUR Level 3s in no time!

Mahalo to HELCO for helping to enable EV adoption in Hawaii.

Update: Here’s the news coverage of the event (including video): HELCO Opens Two EV Fast Chargers on Big Island.

  • Will these level 3 stations also be able to charge Volts? Normally I wouldn’t want to unless it is renewable energy since getting home on gas is always possible, but there may come a time.
