Home > News > Are EVs Cheaper to Own?

Electric vehicle prices continue to drift downward as battery technology improves, manufacturers are achieving economies of scale, and competition in the space heats up. In many instances, the electric vehicle prices are similar to comparable gas cars. Importantly, when you consider total costs of ownership, including maintenance and fuel, electric vehicles come out ahead. The following article from PlugInAmerica describes the current state. While the examples are from other US cities, similar patterns can be seen in Hawaii.

Driving an electric vehicle can not only be fun and good for the environment, it can also be good for the pocketbook. If you must drive, consider one.

  • Hey everybody!
Can anyone start talking about other EV’s such as bikes and motorcycles?
I have been overwhelmed with number of great electric bikes, some foldable and easy to pack up and go in a car or on the bus (as surveyed on the web). However, a big problem seems to exist around the shipping of them and of course the batteries. Even though many deals advertised in the web include free shipping (not an inconsiderable factor…in fact a deal killer for me) on the mainland.
Only one shop in Kona I have called has just one favorite model. That model is never discussed on the popular websites.
How long do we have to wait for electric two wheelers here?

    • Rob – sorry for the delayed reply. I have a friend who has one and can connect you if you like. Please let me know.

    • Rob – Here’s a reply from a friend of mine. He owns an EV and an e-bike.

“I encountered the same issue, trying to find an e-bike locally. I ended up getting a bike from a company called Evelo [evelo.com], since they had a 10-day risk-free trial, including paying for shipping both ways. They are not cheap, but they are having a Black Friday sale currently, which helps make their prices more reasonable. I purchased the Delta model, which I have been very pleased with after a couple of years’ use.”

My comment on this: I think demand will drive supply. As you mentioned, there is a shop in Kona that sells these. I think it is Big Island Electric Bike Co. You might also research shops in Oahu. (shipping to Hilo should be more reasonable). Here are a couple: eBikes (https://www.ebikeshawaii.com) and Aloha E-Bikes (http://www.alohaebike.com).
