This is a belated update on the Show N Shine car show that took place on June 10, 2018 at the Hilo Home Depot. The event was a food drive for the PU’ UHONUA O PUNA organization, a group that is actively supporting those affected by the Kilauea eruption. After hearing getting confirmation that EVs were welcome, we decided to take part. Several members (Cody, Emily, Ed, Stephanie, Ron, Paul, Jeff, Nori, Paula, Gary, Steve) joined us.

There were MANY cool cars to check out – restored hot rods and trucks from the ‘40s, elegant VWs, low riders, modified show cars, imports, and a handful of electric cars. EVs were the minority but we got a good share of the attention. We had 5 electric cars parked next to each other in the show area – 2 Nissan LEAFs, Model S, Model X, and the Roadster.  Members had 2 Chevy Volts and a BMW i3 in another part of the parking lot. Many people came by to ask about our cars and how they worked. The Tesla frunks drew attention to the absence of an engine and were conversation starters – “where’s the engine?” was a frequent question.

The event organizers reported that they received more than they expected so this was a great success.
