Storage (the battery) is a critical component of the electric car – it holds the energy required to propel the car. Its capacity determines how far one can go on a charge. It is also the most costly component of the vehicle at this moment. However, with new technology and manufacturing prowess, the cost of storage continues to drop. This is resulting in more affordable and longer-range electric cars.
This Bloomberg Technology article and 4-minute video explains the issue of ‘curtailment’ (overproduction of wind and solar that results in restriction of production) and how storage can mitigate it. It describes the virtuous cycle that exists with electric car and storage. It also explains the inevitable revolution in battery technology that will further escalate our shift towards a more sustainable future.
